The technology has spread like wildfire from the theater industry, to gaming and household recliners. Once D-Box started this downward sprint they seemed to gain massive traction throughout the industry, also working with Cinemark in several South American locations.įast forward to the current date, they have several hundred locations in over three dozen countries across the globe. The company had been asked to use their motion seating in the first Fast & Furious film and also opened up their first D-Box auditorium in a partnership with Cineplex. They continued to produce D-Box seats with mild success until 2009 when they appeared to find their stride. The biggest issue with these products was the exorbitant cost to make each one, making it easier for them to sell to theater companies rather than to households.
This observation was taken into consideration and shortly after the beginning of the new millennium, they had their first iteration of D-Box seats. This was until several employees from D-Box took note that shoppers were placing their products around the perimeter of their couches, recliners, and chairs to create a simulated motion effect. Starting in 1998, D-Box was originally focused on making high-end subwoofers almost exclusively. However, choose your movie carefully, you want one that is action packed, a real guy flick. While I will not likely be a D-Box regular, I think it is worth the experience at least once. I think of them much like the rides you pay extra for at an amusement park. So, back to the question at hand, are they worth the steep, extra $8.00 cost? I'm going to say try it, if you can afford it, skip the popcorn and catch a try D-Box Matinee if the budget is tight. At first, I found it hard to focus on the movie but, that did not last long and soon I was lost in the flurry of the movie adventure. To me they are reminiscent of what visitors have been experiencing for many years at the theatrical performances of Disneyland, with a grown-up twist. Car chases, airplane acrobatics and even gunfire, all have a lot more pizazz in these seats. My secret trick at the theater, is to use a child's booster seat as a footrest (yes, I am that lady), so adapting to the higher chair was easy enough. Plus, being on the short end of life, I did find them a little tall when I first sat down, my feet barely touched the floor. They are a little hard on the tush when the action lags though. The generous sized chairs are rather comfy and have a bonus, there's no staking out your armrest territory in these babies.
The programmed seats rumble, rock and sway like a choreographed dance with the action of the movie. You can give them a test drive in the theaters lobby before the show. In Utah, these special seats can only be found at The Megaplex theaters. The result is motion that is perfectly synchronized with the movie to create a realistic experience designed to immerse you further into the show. Each seat is specially programmed to choreograph with the visual content of the movie. Better late than never, right?
